The short answer
Prepare the right entry permission for your passport and trip, and keep travel and accommodation details accessible. Confirm the current requirements with the official authority for your case.
Jump to the question you need
Check the passport you will actually use
Nationality alone is not enough. Passport type, validity, travel purpose and the relevant policy period can affect the answer. Use one consistent document throughout your reservations.
If you have more than one passport or unusual circumstances, ask the responsible consulate rather than treating an online planning tool as a definitive answer.
Keep the trip evidence together
Save your flights or trains into and out of China, hotel details and an outline of your trip. If relying on a transit arrangement, retain the confirmed onward journey and check ports and permitted areas.
Complete the arrival process
Follow the NIA’s official arrival-card guidance and the instructions at your port. A completed form and an entry entitlement are separate matters.
For private accommodation, check registration requirements with your host and local authority. Ask hotels how they handle guest registration rather than assuming every accommodation arrangement is identical.
Build a small document folder you can actually use
Keep the documents for your next step easy to reach. An organised offline folder is more useful than searching through months of booking emails at check-in. Protect sensitive copies with your device’s security features.
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Passport | The actual document is valid for the applicable entry basis and matches your bookings. |
| Entry permission | The visa or exemption applies to the dates, purpose, passport type and route. |
| Travel out of China | You can show the onward arrangement required by the relevant policy. |
| First stay | The hotel or host can provide an exact address and check-in instructions. |
| Attraction and rail bookings | Document details match the person who will attend or travel. |
| Contact details | You can reach your airline, accommodation and relevant authority without finding a new website first. |
What happens after landing?
Follow the signs for arrivals or transit according to your trip. Complete any required arrival-information process and present the travel document at immigration. Where relying on a transit arrangement, follow the designated procedure and have the onward booking available.
After admission, collect baggage and follow customs instructions. Then resolve the practical transfer: connectivity, payment and the correct transport to your hotel. Do not book a tight attraction slot on the assumption that the scheduled landing time is your city arrival time.
At the accommodation, present your document for the applicable registration process. If staying privately, arrange that process with your host rather than treating airport arrival formalities as the last administrative step.
Final checks the evening before departure
Recheck the airport and terminal on the live booking, download the next hotel’s details, charge your phone and put the original passport where you can reach it. Keep an alternative payment method separate from your main device.
If the itinerary has changed since your entry-policy check, review it again. A new connection, longer stay or different travel purpose can change the answer even though your passport has not changed.
