The short answer
Use the official 12306 website or app when you can, enter each traveler’s passport details exactly as required, and treat the booking as complete only when a train, date, stations, passenger and seat or carriage details are confirmed. A third-party agent may simplify the interface or take a request before ticket sales open, but a request or payment to the agent is not itself a confirmed rail ticket. Bring the same original passport used for booking to the station. China Railway’s English guidance confirms that foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with valid passports.
Jump to the question you need
When can you buy the ticket?
Plan your route earlier than you buy the train. China Railway releases tickets within a sales window; the exact opening time can vary by station and service, and the railway may adjust sales arrangements. The published advance-sales notice specify a 15-day advance window, including the travel day. Verify your intended train’s live release date and time on 12306. A date outside the live window is not necessarily sold out.
The official advance-sales notice support this mainland window. For example, the official sales calendar checked on 24 September 2026 showed tickets through 8 October. Check the live advance-sales calendar and station release-time lookup for your trip; special services or operating changes can differ.
If an agent offers “booking” long before railway sales open, inspect its wording: is it taking a request to attempt purchase later, or displaying an already issued ticket? Decide what you will do if the requested train or seat class cannot be obtained, and read the agent’s refund and service-fee terms before paying.
Choose the correct station and train
Search the full departure and arrival station names, not just the cities. “Beijing,” “Beijing South” and “Beijing West” refer to different stations; the same principle applies elsewhere. A cheaper or earlier train from the wrong station can cost you an inconvenient transfer or a missed departure. Save the station’s Chinese name alongside the English one shown on your booking.
For each result, compare:
- Departure and arrival stations: Can you reach the departure station from your hotel with luggage, and how far is the arrival station from your next lodging?
- Departure and arrival times: Avoid a connection so tight that a delay, station transfer or security queue would break the trip.
- Duration and transfers: A direct train can be more useful than a nominally cheaper itinerary with a difficult interchange.
- Seat class and conditions: Check what is actually available for each traveler, rather than assuming a seat shown in a search preview is reserved.
For a route example, compare the stations and schedules in Beijing to Shanghai, Beijing to Xi’an or Xi’an to Chengdu. Check the live timetable before booking; a route article is a planning aid, not inventory.
12306 or an agent?
| Choice | What you gain | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official 12306 website or app | Direct access to the railway’s booking, order and change channels | Account setup, passenger identity verification, supported payment and the current rules shown for your ticket. |
| Third-party booking agent | An interface or customer-service channel you may find easier to use | Whether the ticket is already issued, any service charge, handling of unavailable seats, and who processes changes or refunds. |
| Station ticket window | Staff can address a passport or account problem in person | Time to travel to the station, language needs and remaining seat availability. |
The official English 12306 site offers registration, booking and order functions, and its published FAQ covers real-name tickets, changes and refunds. When using an agent, establish who handles your order and any service fees, changes or refunds; do not assume that the agent’s terms are the railway’s terms. Official guidance.
For an account-preparation and booking checklist, see 12306 for foreigners.
Enter passport and passenger information carefully
Create the account and add each actual traveler. On the English registration page, 12306 states that foreign passports are accepted for that registration flow. The form asks for your passport name and number. Follow the current on-screen rules for the order and format of names; reproduce the passport number accurately, including letters and digits. Official guidance.
Before paying, compare every passenger record with the passport that person will carry:
- Full name as entered under the site’s passport-entry rules.
- Document type and passport number.
- Nationality and any other required identity fields.
- Train number, travel date, exact departure and arrival stations.
- Seat class and the final payable amount.
A typo is not something to “fix at the gate.” If account or passenger verification fails, read the precise 12306 prompt and its passport-entry instructions. If you cannot resolve it online, ask at a staffed station window or contact 12306 support with your passport and account details. Do not create multiple inconsistent passenger identities in an attempt to bypass the issue.
Know whether you actually have a ticket
There are three different states that can look similar in an email or app:
| State | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Request received / awaiting release | A seller intends to try when sales open | Keep an alternative train or departure time available. |
| Payment or order pending | A transaction is in progress; issuance may not be complete | Check the order status before paying again. |
| Issued / confirmed | The booking shows the actual train, date, stations, traveler and assigned ticket details | Save the order reference and bring the booked passport. |
The exact labels depend on the sales channel. A card charge alone does not establish that every passenger has an issued seat. If the agent cannot issue your requested ticket, follow its stated alternative or refund process; if you booked with 12306, inspect the order in your 12306 account.
If your linked card fails during checkout, use the payments troubleshooting guide before starting another transaction.
At the station: from entrance to seat
Arrive with enough time for the station transfer, security screening, document checks and finding your gate. Use the original passport used to buy the ticket. Keep the train number and order information available offline, including the Chinese station name. At the entrance or ticket check, follow the signs and staff directions; if an automatic gate cannot read your passport, ask for the staffed or manual document-check channel. China Railway’s real-name ticket guidance makes the booked identity document central to ticket purchase and checks, while directing travelers to station announcements for local procedures. Official guidance.
Check the departure board for your train number and gate. Pass security, wait for boarding to be called, present the passport at the applicable check and use the carriage and seat shown in your booking. Keep the passport accessible until you have completed the journey. Do not assume a screenshot or a different passport will replace the booked document.
Sold out, change of plan or missed train
If the train appears sold out: First verify that sales have opened. Then search another departure time, seat class or appropriate station pair. Compare the new station’s actual travel time from your hotel before buying. Check any waiting-list option currently offered through your booking channel and its payment and fulfillment rules. Keep another train or transport mode as a real fallback; do not build an essential onward connection on an unconfirmed request.
If your schedule changes: Open the existing order and check its available change and refund options before buying a replacement. China Railway’s current change guidance says a ticket can generally be changed once, subject to available capacity, and distinguishes changes before and after the original departure; some later-date changes may carry a fee. Refund charges depend on timing. The specific order screen and current operator rules govern your case. Official ticket-change rules.
If you miss the train: Act before 24:00 on the original departure day: go to a staffed railway window or use the eligible 12306 change channel to see whether a permitted same-day or later change is available for that ticket. Do not board a later train merely because it serves the same cities. If you bought through an agent, check whether it must process the request; contacting the railway and the agent early gives you a clearer answer than purchasing a duplicate ticket immediately. China Railway’s published change guidance includes options after departure, but availability and fees depend on the case. Official ticket-change rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a train ticket with a foreign passport?
Yes. China Railway’s English FAQ says foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets using valid passports. Use the same booked document when you travel. Official guidance.
Does paying an agent mean my seat is confirmed?
Only if the agent has actually issued a ticket with the relevant train and passenger details. A request made before sales open, or a payment marked pending, is not the same thing. Check the seller’s order status and terms.
Do I need a paper ticket?
Do not make paper collection a routine step without a specific instruction from your booking channel. Keep the booking details and bring the original booked passport; follow the station’s document-check procedure. If you need a receipt or have a special ticket situation, use 12306’s current guidance or a staffed window.
What if my passport cannot be read by the gate?
Ask station staff for the manual document-check route and show the original passport and booking details. Allow time for this possibility rather than arriving at the last minute.
Can I change the departure station after buying?
Treat a different station as a material booking change. Check whether your order offers a permitted station or destination change under the current rules; if not, examine the refund cost and availability of a new ticket before canceling the old one.
