Xi’an to Chengdu by High-Speed Train

The simplest rail search is Xi’an North (西安北) to Chengdu East (成都东). Check both station names on the train you book: its journey time, arrival hour and onward journey matter more than a city-to-city headline.

The practical default is a direct train from Xi’an North (西安北) to Chengdu East (成都东). Those are railway stations, not shorthand for every station in either city. Enter their full names when searching, and read the destination on the individual service before paying. A train to another Chengdu station may change your final transfer considerably.

How long does the train take, and is flying better?

A China Railway 12306 notice dated 22 September 2026 gives a specific service example: the added D4577 is scheduled from Xi’an North at 03:33 to Chengdu East at 07:09, a 3-hour-36-minute train ride, on 25 and 28 September and 1, 2, 7 and 8 October 2026. This overnight departure shows one possible rail running time. It is neither a daily timetable nor a statement about available seats.

Time to compare What it includes
3h 36m The scheduled station-to-station ride on D4577 on its stated dates.
45–60 minutes before departure A suggested planning allowance at Xi’an North for finding the entrance, document checks, luggage screening and gate. This is our allowance, not a railway requirement.
About 5h 45m–7h 45m, illustrative A hotel-to-hotel example: 45–75 minutes to reach Xi’an North, 60 minutes before departure, 3½–4½ hours aboard a selected train, and 30–60 minutes from Chengdu East to a hotel. These are planning assumptions, not a measured journey or timetable promise.

For a daytime trip, search your date on 12306 and compare each departure and arrival pair. Other trains can take longer than the dated example.

Train versus plane: compare complete hotel-to-hotel plans. For a flight, include the journey to Xi’an’s airport, check-in and security, baggage collection if applicable, and transport from the arrival airport to your Chengdu address. The train may suit you if you start near a Xi’an metro connection, carry manageable luggage and stay near a Chengdu metro stop. A flight may work better if you are already at an airport, have an onward air connection, or find a better complete schedule and price. Check the flight’s actual arrival airport before deciding.

Which stations should you choose?

Depart from Xi’an North (西安北) for this route search. Xi’an’s district government lists metro Lines 2, 4 and 14 at its “Xi’an North Railway Station” metro stop. Line 2 serves the Bell Tower area; choose the line that fits your starting point. Xi’an North is distinct from Xi’an Railway Station (西安站). If taking a car, put the Chinese railway station name into your map or ride-hailing app and follow the assigned drop-off entrance.

Arrive at Chengdu East (成都东) when booking a service specifically shown as Xi’an North → Chengdu East. The D4577 notice explicitly names Chengdu East as its terminus. Do not assume that every result in a broad “Chengdu” search ends there: confirm the station field on your selected train and ticket. Also check the arrival time. A late train can leave you needing a different city-transfer plan.

How can a foreign-passport holder buy a ticket?

Use the official 12306 English site or app, select Xi’an North / 西安北 and Chengdu East / 成都东, and compare departure time, arrival time, seat class, fare and remaining seats for your date. The 12306 FAQ says its English website accepts valid foreign passports, offers ticket purchase and changes, and requires the identity document used for booking at station entry, exit and boarding. Its registration page identifies foreign passports as accepted for registration. Enter the passenger’s details carefully and take that same physical passport to the station. If online identity verification causes trouble, allow time to seek help at a staffed ticket counter; 12306’s counter guidance lists foreign passports among accepted documents.

How much? Your payable fare depends on the train, travel date and seat class. Compare those options on 12306 for the day you intend to travel, then weigh any saving against the arrival hour and the cost of reaching your hotel. For a flight comparison, add baggage and airport transfers. Displayed seats and fares can change before payment; this page does not promise live availability. See our ticket guide and foreign-passport 12306 guide for more booking help.

How do you enter with luggage?

Before leaving, save the train number, date, departure station and order details where you can reach them offline. Go to Xi’an North, follow signs for departures, present the passport used to buy the ticket, put your bags through security, then check the station display for your train’s gate and platform. Keep the passport handy for boarding. The suggested 45–60-minute arrival allowance is intended to absorb wayfinding and queues; give yourself more on a holiday or when you need counter help.

Pack to the railway’s published limits. 12306 luggage guidance states 20 kg of free carry-on items per ordinary passenger, with 20 kg per item and, for a high-speed multiple-unit train, 130 cm maximum for the sum of an item’s three external dimensions. You are responsible for placing and watching your bags without blocking shared space. Check its prohibited and restricted-items guidance before packing unfamiliar sprays, tools or large equipment. Several heavy cases can also make metro transfers difficult even when they meet railway rules.

How do you get into Chengdu after arrival?

At Chengdu East (成都东), follow 地铁 / Metro signs to the metro station named Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东客站). Metro Lines 2 and 7 serve it. For a hotel near Chunxi Road (春熙路), Line 2 provides a city-centre connection; for another district, check the appropriate interchange and the exit nearest your hotel on a current map. A taxi or ride-hailing pickup can be simpler with bulky luggage or an address far from the metro. Show the driver your hotel’s Chinese name and address.

If your booked train is due late at night, check whether the metro still serves your intended connection and have a car option ready. Allow time to leave the platform, navigate the station and locate the correct pickup area. Do not base a late arrival on the assumption that regular metro service will still be running.

What if seats sell out or the train is delayed?

If your preferred train is sold out, search other times between the exact stations, another acceptable seat class, or a different day. Recheck what 12306 offers before changing stations or attempting a connection; a connection adds another boarding deadline and a missed-transfer risk. If your schedule is firm, compare the complete flight option rather than relying on an unconfirmed seat.

For disruption on travel day, follow station announcements and the information provided by 12306 or staff. Ask about an eligible change or refund before buying a replacement based on assumptions. 12306’s FAQ explains that changes depend on available seats and sets out the channels and conditions; its ticket-order guidance covers online changes and refunds. Tell your Chengdu hotel if arrival will slip, especially when checking in late.

Next step: search your travel date for 西安北 → 成都东 on 12306. Pick a train whose actual destination, arrival hour, fare and seat fit your onward journey; then build the station-entry allowance and city transfers around that booking.
