China Maps: Apps, Addresses and Station Entrances

Prepare a map app for China, save Chinese addresses and avoid wrong station, attraction-gate and hotel-branch mistakes.

The short answer

Start with a map service that covers your destination, then verify the exact entrance and Chinese name. A correct city pin is not enough for a railway station, a large park or a hotel chain.

Jump to the question you need

Which map should you prepare?

Beijing’s official visitor portal points travellers to an English version of Amap and an English city map. Amap is a useful starting option to evaluate; test search, transit directions and language availability on your own handset before the trip.

If you already use another map app, compare one real journey against the destination’s official transport information. Use a service that resolves your hotel and station correctly rather than choosing on familiar branding alone.

Save five places for each city

Your first useful map is a small set of real destinations, not a long list of attractions. Save the information as text or a screenshot as well as a favourite inside the app.

  1. Save the hotel’s full Chinese name, branch, address and entrance.
  2. Save the arrival airport terminal or full railway station name from your ticket.
  3. Save the departure station separately; it may differ from your arrival station.
  4. Save the entrance printed on your first attraction reservation.
  5. Save one simple nearby meal option so you can settle in without crossing the city.

Use Chinese names to resolve ambiguous results

Ask your hotel to send its address in Chinese. Paste that into the map and compare the phone number or street with your confirmation. A similar English hotel name can point to another branch across the city.

Station names to recognise on a first route
English nameChinese nameWhy the distinction matters
Beijing South北京南站Do not substitute Beijing West for a Shanghai-bound booking.
Beijing West北京西站Check this separately for your selected Xi’an service.
Shanghai Hongqiao上海虹桥站The railway station is different from Pudong airport.
Xi’an North西安北站Plan a separate transfer to the old city.
Chengdu East成都东站Use only if this is the terminal on your train ticket.

Read the last part of the route

A route may finish at the centre of a large site while its public gate is elsewhere. Check the entrance, road crossing and walking approach before leaving the station. For luggage or limited mobility, inspect the station exit and ask about lift access rather than assuming the shortest route is the easiest.

At airports and large stations, a ride-hailing pickup zone can be on a different level from the taxi rank. Use terminal signs and the app’s pickup instructions together. Do not stand at a motorway edge because a map pin appears nearby.

When the map stops working

Show the saved address to station information staff, your hotel or the official taxi queue. Include the phone number so staff can resolve an unclear entrance. Avoid translating a station name into a loose English phrase and then searching that translation.

Before a long excursion, save the return meeting point and transport operator’s contact details. A working outbound route is only half the plan, especially when the park exit differs from the entrance.

Put this into your trip
