For many Beijing–Shanghai high-speed trains, the station pair to search is Beijing South (北京南) to Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥). Check the Chinese names on your booking: each city has multiple railway stations. The departure and arrival times shown for a train cover the rail leg only, not travel between your hotels and the stations.

How long does it take, and is the train better than flying?

For your travel date, search Beijing South (北京南) to Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) on the official 12306 service. Compare each train’s departure time, arrival time, and journey duration before allowing for travel to and from the stations.

Choice Compare the whole journey
High-speed train Time to the departure station, station allowance, displayed train time, onward trip and ticket price
Flight Time to the airport, check-in and security allowance, flight time, arrival airport, onward trip and baggage costs

Here is an illustrative planning budget, not a measured journey or a timetable: 45 minutes from a Beijing hotel to Beijing South, 60 minutes at the station as your own buffer, a train displaying 4 hours 30 minutes, and 60 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao to a hotel. That adds up to 7 hours 15 minutes door to door. The two local transfers and station buffer are assumptions; substitute times for your addresses, luggage and travel hour. The 4-hour-30-minute figure illustrates the calculation, not a claim about a particular service.

The train is attractive if you want one intercity boarding process and Hongqiao is convenient for your Shanghai destination. A flight may work better if its departure and arrival airports suit your addresses or its total fare and schedule are more useful. Include ground transport at both ends before deciding.

Which stations should you choose?

Beijing South (北京南) connects to Beijing Subway Lines 4 and 14. Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥) connects to Shanghai Metro Lines 2, 10 and 17. Those connections make this station pair a practical starting search, but your ticket controls where you must actually board and leave the train.

Before paying, read the train number, travel date, station names, departure time and arrival time together. A train ending at Shanghai Railway Station (上海站) needs a different onward plan from one ending at Shanghai Hongqiao. If you have a later flight from Hongqiao Airport, check its terminal and allow time to navigate the airport separately; a rail arrival is not an airport check-in.

How much is a ticket, and can you buy one with a foreign passport?

A fixed fare for this route can be misleading: actual fares may be discounted by varying amounts below published ceilings. A published ceiling is not a purchase quote. Select your exact date, train, and seat class on 12306, then use the displayed payable amount to compare the total for your group. Add local transfers when comparing overall costs.

12306’s English website accepts eligible foreign passports. Enter your passport information accurately when registering and adding passengers, then follow the site’s identity-verification prompts. The official website and app sell electronic tickets; railway station counters are another purchasing option. Bring the original passport used for the booking on travel day. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt cannot be used as a ticket.

If your preferred departure shows no seats, compare another time, date or seat class and recheck the full station pair. Availability changes; a search result or reservation request is not a promise of a seat. Our train ticket guide and 12306 guide for foreign visitors cover the booking steps in more detail.

How do you enter the station with luggage?

At Beijing South, follow the signs for 北京南 / Beijing South, pass security and find the waiting area for your train number. Keep your passport and booking details within reach. China Railway notes that queues may form at security, identity checks and ticket gates. The 60-minute station buffer in the example above is a planning choice, not an official minimum or a guarantee; allow more if you expect to need assistance or extra time with bags.

For high-speed trains, 12306 lists a 20 kg free carry-on allowance for an ordinary adult passenger. Each item must weigh no more than 20 kg, and its length, width and height must add up to no more than 130 cm. Measure a bulky case before leaving and keep valuables with you. Ask the railway about arrangements for a bag that exceeds the limits.

Watch the station display for your train number and boarding gate. If your passport does not pass an automated identity checkpoint, ask staff to direct you to a staffed check. Go to the gate when boarding is announced rather than assuming you can enter the platform at any time.

How do you get into Shanghai after arrival?

At Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥), follow the Metro / 地铁 signs if your destination works with Lines 2, 10 or 17, including any transfer you will need. Look up your hotel’s exact address and the best station exit before setting off; “central Shanghai” is too broad to identify a single stop. Save its Chinese name and location in a map usable in China.

If you have several heavy bags, a late arrival or an inconvenient metro connection, follow signs to the taxi area or arrange a pickup. Check metro operating hours for your arrival date. If your ticket ends at 上海站 / Shanghai Railway Station, plan your onward journey from that station instead. See our Shanghai guide when choosing where to stay.

What if trains sell out or your train is delayed?

When a departure has no seats, search other departures or dates on 12306 before changing your itinerary. China Railway introduced a reservation pilot for selected Beijing–Shanghai trains in July 2026; use it only if the option appears for your search, and wait for an actual ticket confirmation before making plans around it.

If you already have a ticket, 12306 provides ticket-change and refund services. A change depends on available seats and the applicable timing and fare rules. At the station, ask railway staff about your options if the app cannot handle your case. For a delay, follow the train number on official station displays and announcements, and reassess any tightly timed onward booking.

Next step: search 北京南 → 上海虹桥 for your date on 12306. Note the exact stations, scheduled train duration and payable price, then compare the complete trip between your two addresses.
