WHERE TO STAY

How to Book a Hotel in China with a Foreign Passport

Choose and book a China hotel with a foreign passport. Check the exact property, room occupancy, late arrival, deposits and registration, and know what to do if check-in fails.

The short answer

You do not need to limit your search to a special category of “foreigner hotels.” China’s 2024 accommodation measures say local authorities and booking platforms should not impose qualification-based restrictions on accommodation operators receiving foreign guests, and prohibit unlawful advertising that foreign guests are not accepted. That policy does not mean every property has an available room, can meet every booking request, or will have no check-in problems.

Jump to the question you need

For a first independent trip, the practical job is to identify the exact property, reserve a room that fits everyone, and make sure you can reach its reception at your actual arrival time. Save the booking details where you can open them without a connection.

Choose the location by the journeys you will make

Start with the places you expect to visit on most days, plus your arrival station or airport. Compare the journey from two or three possible hotel areas to those places. A lower room rate may lose its advantage if it adds a long transfer twice a day or makes a late arrival difficult.

Your situation Location question to answer before booking
Several sightseeing days in one city How long is the trip to the places you will visit most often?
Early train departure Can you reach the correct station reliably at that hour?
Late flight arrival What transport can still take you to the hotel, and is reception staffed when you arrive?
Multiple city stops Does the hotel make both arrival and departure manageable without paying for avoidable transfers?

Use the destinations guide to settle where you want to spend time, then compare routes in maps in China. For a multi-city trip, put hotel nights against your itinerary before paying for nonrefundable rooms.

Identify the exact branch and entrance

Hotels with similar English names can be far apart. Match the street address, Chinese property name, map pin and booking-platform property page. If the listing mentions a building, floor or separate reception, save those details too. A car may stop at a road entrance while the lobby is inside a complex.

Keep a screenshot of the address in Chinese and the property’s phone number. Share the exact destination, including its branch, when arranging a ride; the DiDi guide covers the next step if you plan to use a ride-hailing app. If the map pin and written address disagree, ask the property which entrance guests should use before arrival.

Book for the people who will actually stay

Enter the correct number of adults and children, with children’s ages when requested. A “double” may describe one bed, while a “twin” usually indicates two; inspect the listed bed configuration rather than relying on the room name alone. Ask whether a child can use an existing bed, whether an extra bed is available and charged, and whether all occupants are included in the final price. Do not assume a room for two can take three people.

At checkout, record:

  1. The full property name and address.
  2. Check-in and checkout dates, total nights and room count.
  3. The named guests, occupancy and bed type.
  4. What is prepaid, what is payable at the property, and which taxes or services are included.
  5. The cancellation deadline, its stated time zone, and any no-show condition.
  6. The property’s contact method and reception hours.

For a wider trip estimate, place the per-room, per-night charge into the 10-day budget guide. Keep a refundable deposit separate from the room cost.

Ask the property the questions your listing cannot settle

A message is especially useful for a late arrival, an unusual bed arrangement, an unclear entrance or a property whose listing gives conflicting information. You can copy this and replace the brackets:

Hello, I have a reservation at [exact property name and address] under [booking name], confirmation number [number], for [check-in date] to [checkout date]. There will be [number] adults and [number] children aged [ages], traveling with foreign passports. Please confirm the room has [bed arrangement] and tell me whether any amount is payable at check-in, including a refundable deposit. Our estimated arrival is [local date and time]. Will reception be available then, and which entrance should we use? If we arrive after midnight, will you hold the reservation? Thank you.

A reply gives you a record of what that property says it can provide; it is not a guarantee against a later operational problem. Keep the booking-platform confirmation and the property’s reply together. If the answer conflicts with the listing, resolve the difference through the booking platform before the free-cancellation deadline where possible.

If you arrive at 02:00, book the night before

Hotel nights are attached to check-in dates, not the calendar date on which you finally reach reception. If your flight lands late on Monday and you expect to reach the hotel at 02:00 Tuesday, book Monday night if you want to go straight into a room. Tell the hotel that you will arrive early Tuesday morning and ask it to hold Monday’s reservation. Check its no-show rules.

Booking only Tuesday night normally means a Tuesday afternoon check-in, unless the property separately agrees to early access. Early check-in depends on room availability and may cost extra. If you do not need a room until later, ask whether the hotel can store luggage, when reception opens and whether storage is available before check-in. For the journey from landing to reception, use the first-day arrival guide.

A delay that moves your arrival across midnight can also affect a prepaid reservation. Contact the property as soon as you know the new local arrival date and time; if you booked through a platform, put the change in its message thread as well.

Understand payment, deposits and cancellation

“Pay at property” and “card required to reserve” do not always mean the same thing. Read the final terms to see whether the property or platform can take a prepayment, authorization, no-show charge or refundable deposit. Ask which payment methods the specific property accepts for any remaining balance and deposit. Keep access to a second payment method; use the payment failure guide if a card or app does not work.

For cancellation, note the exact cutoff shown in the reservation, including its time zone. If a flight change makes the booking unusable, contact the platform and property promptly, retain the messages, and wait for an updated confirmation. A request to waive a charge is not an approved cancellation.

What happens at check-in and with registration?

Bring the passport you used for the reservation and make the booking confirmation accessible offline. At a hotel, the hotel registers a foreign guest’s accommodation and submits the information to the local public security authorities under Article 39 of China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law. The separate procedure for someone staying outside a hotel does not replace the hotel’s registration duty. Official source.

The National Immigration Administration announced nationwide online registration from September 21, 2026, for foreigners staying in domiciles other than hotels; it also retained an offline channel. If you switch from a hotel to a private home or other non-hotel lodging, read the accommodation registration guide for the procedure that applies there. Official source.

If reception says you cannot check in

First, establish why: wrong branch, wrong date, room not ready, occupancy mismatch, missing reservation, payment issue or a stated problem with a foreign passport. Show your confirmation, passport and any written reply. Ask the receptionist to check the booking number and exact property address.

Next, contact the booking platform’s support from the desk if possible. Ask it to speak to the property and either resolve the reservation or document the refusal and arrange a suitable alternative under your booking terms. Keep screenshots of the listing, confirmation, messages and any charge. Avoid cancelling the reservation yourself until you understand how that affects a refund or support case.

If the problem is described as a blanket refusal of foreign guests, the 2024 government notice is relevant, but it does not produce an immediate vacant room. Request the reason in writing, escalate through the platform and seek another hotel with confirmed availability. If it is late, prioritize a safe place to stay; pursue any complaint or refund afterward using your records. Do not travel to an unconfirmed alternative on the assumption that it has a room. FAQ

Do I need a hotel advertised as accepting foreigners?
The 2024 measures address restrictions and unlawful “foreign guests not accepted” advertising. You can search ordinary accommodation listings. Verify that the particular property, room, dates and reception arrangements meet your needs; the policy does not guarantee availability. State Council.

Should I book near the airport for my first night?
Only if the actual arrival time and onward plan make it useful. Compare the transfer to an airport hotel with the transfer straight to your city hotel, then account for another journey the next morning. See the arrival guide before choosing.

Can I check in before the listed time or leave my bags?
Ask the property. Early room access and luggage storage are property-specific services; a Tuesday-night reservation does not by itself give you a room at 02:00 Tuesday.

Who handles accommodation registration if I stay in a hotel?
The hotel registers and submits the accommodation information. For non-hotel stays, the foreign guest or host has a separate registration obligation; see the registration guide. Official source.
