Beijing is worth three full sightseeing days if you want the Forbidden City, one Great Wall section and a third day chosen for your interests. Four days allow the Summer Palace without rushing; five give you room for slower neighborhoods, weather changes or a rest day. Count your arrival separately: clearing the airport or station, reaching the hotel and getting oriented is an arrival day, even if you manage an evening walk.
Is Beijing worth the time?
Choose Beijing if imperial history, large parks and a Great Wall visit matter to you. The sights are spread across a large city, so the useful planning question is which experiences deserve an entire day. Treat the Palace Museum and a Wall excursion as fixed points, then build around your energy. If you have only two full days, you must choose between the Wall and a fuller city visit; three is the practical starting point for both.
The itinerary below assumes three to five full sightseeing days after arrival. It is a planning sequence, not a promise about travel times or admission. Check the city’s official ticketing directory and each venue’s current instructions before fixing dates.
A workable 3, 4 or 5-day itinerary
Arrival day — settle in. Travel from your airport or railway station to the hotel, check the route to its nearest subway station, and confirm that your maps and payment methods work. Eat near the hotel. If you arrive early and feel fresh, take a short neighborhood walk; save ticketed sights for a full day. See the first-day checklist.
Full sightseeing day 1 — Forbidden City, then Jingshan. Use your Palace Museum reservation as the day’s anchor. Enter at its south Meridian Gate, work north through the main courts and areas you most want to see, and leave by the north exit. Cross toward Jingshan Park for the elevated view back over the palace. This order follows the museum’s visitor route and avoids planning a second crossing of the complex. Beijing official visitor information. If you also want to enter Tiananmen Square, check its separate reservation system; a Palace Museum ticket is not a Square reservation. Beijing official visitor information. Put a Square visit before the museum only if the confirmed reservations and access instructions fit together. Otherwise, keep the palace day simple. Consult the Forbidden City ticket guide before setting this day.

Full sightseeing day 2 — one Great Wall section. Choose Mutianyu or Badaling, decide how you will make the outward and return journey, and leave the whole day available. Include the journey from your hotel to the departure point, entrance procedures, walking, breaks and the trip back. Do not attach the Summer Palace or another major sight to this day. If visibility or conditions are poor, use a flexible booking or swap this day with day 3 where your reservations permit.
Full sightseeing day 3 — Temple of Heaven and a neighborhood. Visit the Temple of Heaven park and decide whether you want admission to its separately ticketed historic structures; park entry alone does not necessarily cover everything inside. Beijing official visitor information. Follow with a meal and an unhurried walk in a neighborhood you can reach conveniently from your hotel. This is the day to recover some flexibility after two reservation-led days. Three-day cut: depart after this day; leave the Summer Palace for another visit.
Full sightseeing day 4 — Summer Palace. Give the gardens, lake paths and pauses a substantial part of the day. Pick a manageable route through the grounds rather than trying to cover every gate and structure. The North Palace Gate is served by Beigongmen on subway Line 4. Beijing official visitor information. Keep the evening light. Four-day cut: stop here; day 5 is optional.

Full sightseeing day 5 — your choice, with slack. Revisit a central neighborhood, spend longer in a museum that interests you, or use this as the replacement day for a Wall outing disrupted by weather. For families or travelers who prefer shorter walking days, split the Temple of Heaven and neighborhood time across days 3 and 5. If day 5 is also your departure day, it is not a full sightseeing day: plan only an activity you can abandon without affecting your transfer.

Where to stay in Beijing: compare four practical bases
For a first Beijing stay focused on history, start by shortlisting Wangfujing/Dongcheng or Qianmen, then compare actual hotels. A useful base is the one whose entrance, station access, room setup and arrival route work for your trip. An area name alone cannot settle those questions.
| Area | Fits | Tradeoff | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wangfujing (王府井), Dongcheng | A central base for visitors planning several full sightseeing days | “Near Wangfujing” can describe quite different hotel locations | Plot the hotel entrance, the station exit you would use and your route with luggage |
| Qianmen (前门) | A history-focused stay when you want this part of the city as your starting point | The final approach to a property may matter more than its map distance | Ask where a taxi can stop and how you reach the entrance with bags |
| Dongzhimen (东直门) | An arrival or departure plan that benefits from the Capital Airport Express connection | That connection is not, by itself, a reason to choose it for a Daxing flight | Confirm the walk between your hotel and the station, plus the service you need on your travel date |
| Xidan (西单) | A transport-oriented base, especially when an actual hotel connection to Line 4 helps your plans | A convenient interchange does not make every nearby listing equally convenient | Check the precise station exit and the onward journey you intend to make |
Beijing Capital International Airport lists Dongzhimen among the Capital Airport Express stops. Beijing Capital International Airport A Beijing government guide identifies Xidan station with Lines 1 and 4. Beijing government guide Those are useful connections; the recommendations in the table are planning judgments, not reports from stays at particular hotels.
Choose for your actual arrival and sightseeing days
With three full days and a family history itinerary, compare Wangfujing/Dongcheng and Qianmen first. Map the journeys for your Palace day, Temple of Heaven day and any other priorities, then look closely at the room and bed arrangement. If the Forbidden City is central to the plan, sort out ticket requirements separately from the hotel choice.
If a Capital Airport arrival connection is your priority, put a suitable Dongzhimen property on the shortlist. First read the airport code on your flight: PEK is Capital; PKX is Daxing. For a late Daxing arrival, choose against your actual onward route and current operating hours, including how you will reach the hotel entrance after check-in hours. See the late-arrival guidance before relying on a train or station connection.
For a next-day rail departure, identify the departure station on your ticket before treating any district as a “train-station base.” The station and the route from a particular hotel decide whether Xidan, another central property or a different arrangement is useful. Check that detail when planning a Beijing–Shanghai or Beijing–Xi’an journey. For a short city stay, changing hotels solely to change neighborhoods usually costs usable time; an arrival or departure need may justify it.
Compare exact hotels, then request the room quote
Use this five-point check for two or three properties in your chosen area:
- Pin the entrance, not just the district label. Save its Chinese name and address for maps in China.
- Trace the last stretch from your intended station exit or taxi drop-off. Ask the property about stairs and luggage access where the route is unclear.
- Confirm late check-in against your flight and transfer plan, including how to reach staff if you arrive after the desk’s usual hours.
- Specify the occupants and beds: adults, children, ages where requested, bed types and any extra-bed or child-occupancy conditions. The China hotels guide covers the broader booking questions.
- Request the exact room quote for your dates and occupancy. Check what it includes, the cancellation terms and whether a quieter room can be requested; use the hotel-quote cost guide to compare like with like.
Book after the property answers the points that could change your arrival or sleep arrangements. Keep its name and entrance address handy for the first transfer.
Three quick questions
Can I walk to all the main sights from one base? Plan for separate journeys. The Palace, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and a Wall outing do not become one walking itinerary through hotel choice. For a three-to-five-full-day visit, judge a base by the trips you will actually make.
Should I sleep near the airport or in the city? A final-night airport hotel may trade city time for a more reliable early-flight transfer. Compare your flight time, airport code, available transport and the cost of moving hotels; there is no categorical answer.
Should I stay by one train station? Only if your confirmed departure and hotel-to-station route make that useful. A station-sounding address is not a substitute for checking the exact journey with bags.
Mutianyu or Badaling: choose and plan your Great Wall day
The short answer
Choose Mutianyu if you want to arrange a driver or group trip around a specific walking route and, if useful, a lift. Choose Badaling if you prefer to build the day around a train you can book in both directions. For a family seeking a short walk, the better choice is the one whose actual route suits everyone, including the approach, steps and return. Keep either choice as a full day in your Beijing itinerary; leave the Summer Palace for another day.
| Check | Mutianyu | Badaling |
|---|---|---|
| Best conditional fit | You can confirm road transport, time on the Wall and a suitable walking route. | You can secure workable outbound and return trains, then confirm the approach from the station. |
| Transfer to check | The exact drop-off and return meeting point; a public transport trip also needs a checked final connection. | The full destination station name, departure station printed on each ticket and route from arrival station to entrance. |
| Physical plan | Match the chosen lift and its exit to the walk you intend to do. | Check the approach and your proposed Wall walk before treating the rail journey as an easy day. |
Neither choice is automatically less crowded, cheaper or easier. Compare the whole trip from your Beijing hotel base, not just the ride to the attraction.
Mutianyu: build the road trip backward from your return
Save 慕田峪长城 in your map with the Chinese name. First choose a manageable Wall route and a turnaround point, then check which admission, shuttle and lift products get you to that route. Beijing’s visitor page identifies cable cars and alpine slides at Mutianyu; their presence does not make every route suitable for every visitor.
For a driver, agree on the destination, drop-off, return meeting point, pickup time, contact method and any waiting charges before setting off. For a group trip, ask for the pickup location, actual visit time, shop stops and exactly which tickets and rides are included. If using public transport, check the current outbound connections, the final ride to the scenic area and a viable way back; allow for transfers when setting your turnaround point. Carry the agreed pickup details offline.
Badaling: make the rail tickets a round trip
Save 八达岭长城 as the attraction, then use 12306 to verify the full station name for your selected train. Read the Beijing departure station on the actual outbound ticket; do the same for the return ticket. Confirm both departures and the route between the arrival station and the entrance before paying for the rest of the day. A train’s running time is only one part of the journey: allow for getting to your departure station, station procedures, the entrance approach and your walk.
Set a Wall turnaround point that leaves time to retrace the route and reach your return train. Keep your train ticket details accessible offline.
Admission is only one part of the ticket
Mutianyu’s operator notice says its Great Wall admission policy does not include the shuttle, cable car, ropeway or slide. Check the current inclusions of the specific product before paying, including which ride takes you up and which brings you down. Do not assume different lifts or tickets are interchangeable.
A cable car can remove part of a climb, but it cannot establish that the entrance approach, boarding, remaining steps, grades or final stretch will work for someone with limited mobility. Ask the operator about the precise route and any assistance needed. For children or mixed walking abilities, choose a shorter out-and-back walk and turn around before anyone is committed to a difficult return.
Book in an order that protects the day
- Choose the section and sketch a walk everyone in your party can manage.
- Check the attraction’s current operating notices, entry availability and passport booking process. Badaling’s operator describes both real-name advance purchase and on-site purchase; check availability rather than counting on a walk-up ticket.
- Confirm transport both ways: driver or group pickup details for Mutianyu, or the selected outbound and return trains for Badaling.
- Compare admission, shuttle and lift inclusions, cancellation terms and the total day cost before paying.
- Save confirmations, Chinese destination names, return instructions and operator contacts offline; reconfirm the meeting point or station approach before leaving your hotel.
If weather, tickets or the return plan changes
Check the attraction’s notices and your transport operator’s updates before departure when rain, wind, snow or poor visibility threatens the day. A lift or part of a site may stop operating; check cancellation terms before deciding to travel. If your chosen entry, lift or return train is sold out, rebuild the complete day before switching sections. Preserve any separate Forbidden City reservation, and use an indoor Beijing day as your fallback if the Wall trip cannot work safely.
Can I decide between the two on the morning? Only if you can confirm entry, a suitable route and a workable return that morning. Check the full chain before leaving.
What if our return pickup fails? Contact the driver or group operator using your saved details, give the agreed meeting point and stay where you can describe your location. Keep a backup return option in mind before the day begins.
Arriving and getting between sights
Check whether your flight uses Beijing Capital or Beijing Daxing airport; they are different arrival points. Beijing’s subway network reaches both airports and several main railway stations, but your actual journey still depends on the terminal, station, service period, transfers and your hotel. Beijing official visitor information. With luggage or a late arrival, compare a rail route against a clearly identified taxi or official ride-hailing pickup before you travel. Keep the hotel name and address in Chinese available offline.
Within the city, group the Palace Museum with Jingshan because of their physical order. Put the Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace on separate days in this plan. Save your intended entrances in a map that works for your trip; a pin at the center of a large park is not necessarily its usable gate. For intercity travel, confirm your exact departure station before buying a train ticket, and leave a comfortable margin between checkout and departure. More options are in the China transport guide.
Eating without overplanning
Use meals to support the route. Have breakfast near your hotel before an early ticketed visit; look for lunch around the area where your sightseeing day actually ends. On the Wall day, carry water and a snack and verify what food is available at your chosen entrance. For one deliberate Beijing meal, consider roast duck with a reservation if a particular restaurant matters to you. Otherwise, choose a convenient place and allow time to sit down. Account for meals, local transport, attraction admission, the Wall transfer and any optional lift or shuttle when estimating trip cost; prices vary by choices and date.
What to book first and what to cut
- Fix your travel dates and full days. Check the Palace Museum’s current opening calendar before assigning it a day. Its ticket information says real-name advance booking is required, same-day tickets are not sold, and it normally closes on Mondays except statutory holidays. Bring the original identification used for the booking. Palace Museum.
- Secure the Palace Museum admission. If entering Tiananmen Square is part of your plan, arrange its separate reservation through the channels listed by the city. Do not assume one booking grants access to the other. Beijing official visitor information.
- Set the Wall day and its transport. Decide on a section, confirm access requirements, then coordinate tickets and transfers. Keep another day swappable if your bookings allow.
- Choose a hotel base, then fill the flexible days. Confirm current park ticket options for the Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace; Beijing’s public-service guidance describes online and offline purchase routes, with different practical requirements. Beijing official visitor information.
If you tire easily, cut the optional neighborhood walk before shortening the palace or Wall day. In heat, cold, rain or poor visibility, shorten exposed walking and check official venue notices before leaving. With children, choose one principal sight per day and protect meal and rest time. If a Palace Museum ticket is unavailable, keep the rest of the trip: visit the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and neighborhoods, then check for another eligible palace date. A Square reservation does not substitute for palace admission.
Beijing planning FAQs
Are three days enough? Yes, if they are three full sightseeing days and you accept one Wall day, one palace day and one selective city day. Add a fourth for the Summer Palace.
Can I do the Forbidden City and Jingshan together? Yes, that is the natural sequence: enter the museum from the south, exit north and continue to Jingshan. Allow the palace visit to determine the pace; Jingshan can be a shorter final stop.
Does a Forbidden City booking include Tiananmen Square? No. The Square lists its own reservation channels. Check access instructions for both places before linking them in one morning. Beijing official visitor information.
Should I combine the Great Wall and Summer Palace? For a first independent visit, give each its own day. The Wall’s round trip and walking can absorb more of the day than expected; the Summer Palace also rewards a slower route.
What if payment or a booking app fails? Keep your identity details consistent, use the venue’s official instructions and check whether an offline purchase route exists for that particular attraction. Do not assume an offline option applies to the Palace Museum. See payment failure steps and retain a flexible activity for that day.
Where to go next
First decide how many full Beijing days fit your wider journey. Then compare a 5-day China trip with 10 days or 14 days if you want more than one city. Xi’an follows naturally for travelers continuing with history; Shanghai offers a different urban chapter. Browse the destinations or the China travel guide once your Beijing dates and onward station are clear.
